Our Purpose

If we were to boil the mission of the church down into two words we think they would be the two words of the Lord Jesus, make disciples (Matthew 28:19-20). Some of us are fond of boiling the purpose of our church down into seven words: making more and better disciples of Christ. Just as businesses exist to make money, churches exist to make disciples. We believe churches are disobedient to the will of God if they are not making more and better followers of Jesus Christ.

The Process of Making Disciples

We have concluded that the biblical process of making more and better disciples looks like this:

Making More Disciples

  • Evangelize. A disciple-making church makes extensive contact with non-Christians and explains the gospel clearly and confidently to all who will listen. (Matthew 9:35; Luke 13:22; Acts 8:1-5; 19:8-10; Romans 15:20)
  • Baptize. As people put their trust in Christ for salvation, a disciple-making church baptizes them. (John 4:1,2; Acts 2:41; 8:15-16, 36-38; 9:18; 10:46-48; 16:15, 31-34; I Corinthians 1:13-17)

  • Congregationalize. A disciple-making church then assimilates those who have believed into the local church. (Acts 2:41)

Making Better Disciples

  • Stabilize. A disciple-making church grounds new believers in their newfound faith. (Acts 13:42-43; 14:21 15:36,41; 18:23; 20:1-3, 20, 28-32)

  • Train. A disciple-making church equips grounded believers to practice the Christian lifestyle and to serve the Lord and others in Jesus' name. (Colossians 1:28-29)

  • Mobilize. A disciple-making church organizes believers to serve the Lord in accordance with their spiritual gifts and personal callings. (1 Corinthians 12-14; Ephesians 4:11-16; I Peter 4:10-11)
We are committed to being a comprehensive disciple-making church. That means that we want all six aspects of the disciple-making process described above to be present in our church at all time.

The Responsibilities

Every member of the body of Christ has God-given responsibilities that contribute to the making of more and better disciples of Christ.

Our church leaders (staff, elders, and ministry leaders) are responsible to provide the church with disciple making programs that are intentional, sequential, culturally relevant, field-tested and effective and to pray for the unleashing of God's power through our ministry.

Our members also have responsibilities to become and make followers of Jesus Christ. Therefore, we encourage every member to have three involvements with the church:

  • A worship involvement. By worship we mean expressing to God how great and good we have discovered Him to be . This involves regularly participating in the worship services of the church.

  • A fellowship involvement. By fellowship we mean getting relationally connected to other growing Christians with whom you interact with the Word of God. We are convinced that each believer needs growing relationships with growing Christians to grow spiritually mature.

  • A partnership involvement. By partnership we mean working together with the rest of the church body to accomplish the mission and the vision God has given to BSBC. This involves using our time, money and spiritual gifts to the glory of God and to the advancement of His work. (Ephesians 4:16; 1 Peter 2:5,9)

The Results of Everyone Fulfilling their Responsibilities

If our leaders do a good job of providing the membership with quality disciple making programs and our members involve themselves in worship, fellowship and partnership, BSBC will be effective at making more and better followers of Christ. The body of Christ grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work (Ephesians 4:11-16).
